Deliberate statelessness as sabachtan at civilization scale (Clastres [283], Scott [282])

LAYMAN. The standard reading of hill peoples and forest foragers is that they have not yet discovered civilization. Clastres was the first to invert this: they are former city dwellers who chose to leave. The Yanomamo, the Guarani, the Tupi were sedentary agriculturalists who took up foraging on purpose to escape forced labor, disease, and colonial extraction. They designed social structures that keep states from arising among them. Scott extends this to Southeast Asia across 2,000 years of documented flight from valley kingdoms. Sabachtan gnosticism makes the same inversion at the discursive scale. The standard reading of someone who refuses the dominant discourse is that they have not yet learned it. The sabachtan inversion: they see the gorgonification operating through the dominant discourse and refuse it on purpose. What looks like ignorance from the valley is sight from the hills. Clastres's canonical line, quoted by Scott: the history of peoples without history is a history of their struggle against the state. The sabachtan parallel: the history of people without platforms is a history of their struggle against the capture of their attention.
