Why this resource is included

Official landmark designation report. Hughes occupied the top floor of this 1869 Italianate brownstone as a workroom from 1947 to 1967. The Harpers purchased the house in 1947; Hughes moved in with them. For the campaign: this is the location that pops the dream bubble. If bookworms decide to visit Hughes’s house during the 48-hour window, they transition from the fictional setting to the historical Harlem. The building is now home to the I, Too, Arts Collective. Block renamed Langston Hughes Place.
